GOING GREEN
FURNITURE IDEOLOGY?
OR JUST ANOTHER CONCEPT?

Nowadays the “going green” movement seems a bit more controversial than practical.  Some complain that it’s confusing, too vague and a wholly generic concept to be simply avoided, while others say it’s our generation’s duty and a race to save our dying planet.  But regardless of where you fall on this issue, there’s one thing that we hope both sides will agree on: that the way we treat our planet today will determine the way of life for Earth’s inhabitants tomorrow.

AA ELEGANT FURNITURE EXPERIMENTED WITH GREEN MATERIAL RE-PROCESSING

With that in mind we tested the idea of generating new furniture and designs from recycled material and have found it to be generally workable.  The entire process isn’t necessarily as cheap as the more popular and conventional methods in business practice today but with its unique line of environmental benefits it does show promise for its cost.  Take a look at this example:

THIS MASTERPIECE!

GREEN INSPIRATION

A customer came into our store just a week ago and asked us for green and environmentally-friendly paint with which to spray paint a full oak dining room set he had bought earlier.  He stated he was eager to start “going green,” a novel idea he had heard about from one of his younger children. The dear gentleman proceeded to say he’d already painted his outdoor furniture green, his pool enclosure green, and, to get with the program, he was also preparing his dining room, his Pub table and chairs to paint them… green!

Although his idea of contributing was a little silly, it did point to a surprising trend in today’s marketplace.  Namely, there is a growing population of individuals who are just not sure exactly what it means to “Go Green.” Our poor client is not alone.

If you can admit that you’re late to the movement as well, stand up and be counted!  Get educated today and make those pertinent changes necessary to make a difference in our planet, remembering that the life we choose today will ultimately determine the life we can all live tomorrow.

THE SIMPLE CHANGES THAT SAVED US MEGA BUCKS!

Honestly, you can’t judge anyone too harshly if they haven’t “gotten with it” yet.  After all, Wikipedia hasn’t created a go-to page for “going green” just yet. There are still some concerns with the budding movement and to really embrace the true vision behind it you must understand them as well.  For example, in a social networking group we found that the members frequently thought “going green” was realistic only for a number of people at higher income levels, reservations mirroring those faced by organic foods and healthy living lifestyles.  This presents a challenge.  It means that people wanting to join the movement are reluctant and are frequently asking how much money they can spend to live up to the current principle and practices of “going green.”

SAVE THE LANDFILL BY REDISCOVERING YOUR FURNITURE

THE BEFORE

THE AFTER

But before you start thinking that “going green” is as complex and costly as reusing old wood from your grandmother’s old, demolished house to build a new one and furniture, remember that the idea is not about expensive methods and things far-reaching.

An individual can make a plethora of cheaper, minor adjustments in his choices to start his journey towards “going green.”  Here are 4 baby steps you can adopt right now to get started.  In the end you can rest assured that you’ll have a foot into the door to the “going green” movement.

1.     Try buying items that are produced locally and whenever you can support local shops and businesses
2.     Consider keeping older furniture a little while longer instead of transporting them straight to the local landfill.
3.     Try checking for recycled, non-toxic and organic labels on products when you shop.
4.     And whatever you do, make sure to stay consistent and practice what you preach.

The point? Whether “going green” is an ideology, concept, or a way of life, we all know that preserving the habitat of man today also means preserving our existence tomorrow.  We can all begin doing our part and making small steps to make our world a better, safer place for ourselves and all our children!

Below are a few “green” signs that are currently in use around the world and even in your local shop.  Recognize any of them?  Comment and leave your personal stories surrounding your favorite symbols!

Choices to Make Before Your Next Furniture Purchase: The 12-point Checklist.

1. LOCATION OF FURNITURE IN THE HOME
Figure out where will be its permanent resting place in the home.

2. TYPE OF FURNITURE
Is it a Decorative or Functional piece, Fixed or Mobile, Single use or Multi-purpose

3. STYLE
Are you looking for a Traditional, Casual, Country, Eclectic or Contemporary setting,
which is divided into 2 categories, Casual Contemporary and Modern Contemporary.

4. COVERING MATERIAL
Your full attention must be given to the type of covering on a desired sofa to the finish
on your case goods. However, sometimes it is really hard to figure the makeup of your
case goods but generally it is veneer over MDF(medium density fiberboard). In the case of an upholstered sofa, you should be interested to know if the material is color fast, water and stain resistant. You should also know that if your sofa is covered with silk, it will deteriorate rapidly with sunlight.

5. STRUCTURAL QUALITIES
The quality of furniture usually coincide with its cost, so, most of the time YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Care should be given to the initial cost, type of MAINTENANCE and REPLACEMENT parts required for its upkeep. Always remember that some of the time, specifications are different in the manufacturing of commercial, residential, industrial and institutional furniture, therefore, you may endure mega problems if you purchase furniture for residential use and utilize it for rentals or in a commercial environment.

6. TEXTURE, MANIFESTATION AND COLOR
The appearance of the furniture you purchase tells a story about your personality. You must be certain the color, feel, consistency and appearance are all synchronized to your
likeness and you will ultimately be able to live with it for a very long time.

7. COMFORT AND PHYSICAL PROPORTION
In the case of a sofa and you been a very tall person, care should be given to a sofa that you can comfortably lay into and stretch out. You don’t need to buy a deep deck sofa if you are only 5 feet tall. And, there is no need to purchase a sofa with the seat cushions 20” high and bypass the one with a seat height of 17 inches. Purchasing your furniture should be about you and not about your friends, neighbors and what your parents had.

8. WARRANTY
Most new furniture comes with 1 year warranty. However, most of your problem with the furniture will definitely show it manifestation soon after the year past. Seem strategically planned, huh! Maybe it is. Companies like AA Elegant furniture offer extended warranties,
maintenance and repair service programs for overcoming those fears.

9. TIPS FOR YOUR FURNITURE TO ACHIEVE THE STATUS OF A ROOM PLEASER
--- How does it compliment the room.
--- Is it too bulky, too high and the sofa back looks like a church steeple, too short and the Sofa back make the sofa look like a canoe, too different to fit in with my existing style.
--- Know your style, traditional, contemporary, country etc.
--- The MOOD you achieve in the presence of the furniture, depressing, upbeat, grumpy and Relaxing have a lot to do with color. Red constitutes love and anger, Blue denotes cold formal and sad, Yellow denotes a positive and optimistic mood, Green denotes calm and reminiscing, Purple denotes femininity and royalty, Orange denotes liveliness and upbeat, white denotes depression, Black denotes sophistication while Brown denotes warmth and an inviting mood

10. STORE REPUTATION
Find out how the store handle its customer service requests from past customers, how was the experience when they immediately call in damages on delivered furniture, how was the warranty handled and how long it took to open and close the damage request. It is one of those stores that have amnesia about a customer, the next minute after a customer purchase is concluded

11. NEW FURNITURE POINTS OF ENTRY AND ACCESS TO ITS PERMANENT SPOT
Is the furniture going upstairs and can it be easily maneuvered around and up the staircase. Is the large second floor window the only entryway for the size furniture you are thinking of purchasing?

12. FUNDING
Can you afford the furniture you just laid eyes on and want to make an impulse purchase? Are you making the purchase on an item you really don’t need but want it to settle the competition with your coworker, friend or neighbor? Can you afford to make the purchase without jeopardizing the utility bill which is already 2 months pass due?
